The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring a safe and commercially driven approach to the commercial Trade waste fleet based in Nottingham & Leicester. Ensuring that we achieve the highest possible service levels whilst remaining commercially agile and productivity focussed.

You will drive productivity of the drivers, optimising of the workload, management of the operations desk and ensuring that internal and external stakeholders expectations are met and exceeded. Responsible for budget and Operating profit level by constantly reviewing the set rounds and amending where needed to optimise the fleet / vehicle revenues.

This role needs to transform the current operation into one that is metric driven, responsive and driven by a dynamic can do attitude and requires a focussed leader who brings others with them in order to achieve daily targets.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Maintain positive relationships with both internal and external customers
  • Supports the optimisation of resources and reviews the operations to support improve profitability and customer service
  • Promotes positive employee engagement through open communication
  • Contributes to the development of the site as a whole by identifying and sharing best practice with peers
  • Monitors operational staff performance and suggests corrective action where appropriate
  • Maintain adherence to the relevant legislative requirements and Company procedures and standards (including Health and Safety, personnel, finance and Transport)
  • Will be required to conduct accident/incident investigations
  • Ensure compliance with transport and environmental legislation
  • Effective and detailed management of the P&L to enable production of accurate weekly forecasts
  • Detailed cost management
  • Champion the Elemos/ VWS system and ensure drivers comply with requirements
  • Assist in the production of annual budgets in accordance with corporate strategy
  • Prompt and effective resolution of account queries ensuring rectifications are put in place to prevent repeats
  • Managing trade route efficiency and utilising optimum disposal outlets where needed within the area to ensure effective use of vehicles and facilities
  • Manage driver availability and coverage in line with legislation and company procedures to ensure that there is suitable coverage at all times
  • Proactively manage absenteeism using the ‘Bradford Factor’ system in accordance with company policy
  • Perform administrative duties including input of pay and bonus onto the company systems
  • Proactive vehicle management, including liaison with the transport compliance team, safe vehicle operations, wheel security, monitor vehicle gross weights
  • Interrogation of driver KPI reports and suitable action taken where issues identified
  • Ensure a suitable debrief is completed with all drivers
  • Lead monthly driver meetings for all trade waste drivers
  • Support on road activity and feedback deviations to the relevant department in a timely manner
  • Ensure that any potential fails are advised to the business frequently through the day
  • Supervise vehicle availability on a daily basis ensuring that drivers have completed their checks in accordance with company policy
  • Contribute toward ongoing cost control, actively seeking to improve efficiency and reduce operating costs e.g. running and analysing cost centre reports
  • Ensure all administrative tasks associated with the trade office are completed, including time sheets, tachograph records, payroll records, holiday rotas
  • Record and investigate fully all personal injuries and near misses. Promoting a safe working culture and environment at all times
  • In conjunction with the health and safety department, ensures that mandatory training, induction and toolbox talks are delivered in line with company policy
  • Lead, motivate and develop direct reports, identifying training needs to maintain a flexible and multi-skilled workforce
  • Carry out annual appraisals
  • Carry out, out of hours observations
  • Suitable candidates will have experience in a similar role within a Services or Logistics industry, preferably with waste industry knowledge, although this is not essential.  You will be able to demonstrate excellent customer service and planning and organisational skills and be a strong communicator.
