Shepherd Enables Operators to Reduce Energy Consumption in Activated Sludge Plants through Reduced Aeration
Enva, a leading waste, water and industrial services company in the UK and Ireland has partnered with Bactest, a venture backed Cambridge UK based company that specialises in turning microbial activity into data that can be used to make management and operational decisions.
Bactest manufacture “Shepherd”, a system that is unique in its ability to reduce energy consumption and increase operational compliance. It is an in-situ Activated Sludge Monitoring and Management System that automatically calculates and reports an accurate BOD5 proxy, recommended airflow, process status and indicative F:M, based on a sample taken every 60 minutes.
The information captured by the Shepherd can be used by operators to optimise aeration rates in near real-time. Aeration energy cost savings in excess of 20% are typical. The system also allows operators to identify toxic events adversely affecting the activated sludge biomass and equipment failures within the plant. Reports are displayed locally on a control panel as well as accessed remotely via an online application. All test results, historical and trending data can be viewed online. The probe by its design and operation is self-cleaning, finally offering a technology for dissolved oxygen control that is not prone to biomass fouling.
Enva are now Bactest’s sole agent in Ireland. “We are delighted to be bringing Bactest’s innovative solution to the Irish Market” said Kieran Staunton, Director of New Business Development at Enva. “We continuously help our clients improve efficiencies, reduce costs and maintain compliance and this new solution compliments our service offering. The potential energy savings and increased operational efficiencies are impressive and we look forward to delivering for our customers.”
Paul Jurczuk, Sales Director for Bactest says, “We are very excited about the potential improvements that can be achieved in waste water processing by working with Enva; combining Enva’s strong customer commitment with Bactest’s solutions. Clean water and the protection of the environment is important to all of us and minimising the amount of resource required to clean our water can only be beneficial. Sometimes we have to look beyond the commercial benefits and realise the potential for positive change”
