Holme Pierrepont recycling success with Enva

Holme Pierrepont Country Park, home of the National Water Sports Centre (NWSC), in Nottinghamshire is a leading UK sporting venue and outdoor leisure attraction. Set within a country park setting the site includes a family fun park sky trail, high rope course, mini golf course, cycle and segway hire and a café.

Enva has worked with Holme Pierrepont since 2007, most recently providing services via Serco Leisure which was awarded a 21-year contract to manage, operate and improve the 270-acre site in 2013 by Nottinghamshire County Council.

Recycling and resource recovery services provided by Enva comprise mixed recycling, food and general waste collections for all onsite facilities including;

  • National Water Sports Centre - sports and fitness facilities for members, the local community and some of the country’s leading athletes.
  • Country Park - family friendly activities including sky trail, climbing wall and mini golf course a lagoon and rapids.
  • Accommodation - a 54 room hotel, camping, glamping and a self-contained cottage sleeping 11.

Enva also provide waste and recycling services for the venue’s events. During busy periods this will see Holme Pierrepont require large numbers of containers for a short period of time. Enva and Holme Pierrepont staff maintain constant dialogue to optimise recycling performance and plan for any scheduled events.

All waste is collected by Enva from the onsite compounds and transported to its recycling facility in Colwick. Here a variety of recyclable materials are recovered for recycling including, plastic bottles, tins and cans, paper and cardboard. Any waste that cannot be recycled is used as a fuel in the production of sustainable energy.

In addition to ensuring adequate waste capacity and the effective segregation of recyclable materials, Enva has provided signage for the waste compounds. This is important as these are areas used by the public so it helps them sort their waste at source.

Steve Bishop, Grounds Manager at Holme Pierrepont, says: “We have a very complex site here at the Holme Pierrepoint Country Park, spanning over 280 acres and several bin locations. As with such big sites there are always problems that arise, especially during our very busy event season. Whenever this happens, Enva have always been quick to resolve the problem or offer a better solution. I can call the management team, or the office and they are always happy to help.”

Some of the notable success of the Enva and Holme Pierrepont partnership include:

  • 106 tonnes of waste sustainably managed year to date
  • 95.57% recycling rate
  • A significant reduction in litter on site.

Serco Leisure provides leisure services on behalf of Community Leisure Trusts, local authorities and Sport England and is one of the UK’s leading national operators of indoor and outdoor leisure spaces from elite sporting facilities through to local community leisure centres.

Enva is committed to supporting Serco Leisure in its journey to net zero carbon. This will be achieved by continuing to work closely together to reduce waste transportation, increase onsite segregation and minimising the contamination of recyclable waste in order to preserve its environmental and commercial value.
