New Enva facility sets new standard for IBC reconditioning in Scotland
Enva has opened a new Intermediate Bulk Container (IBC) reconditioning and recycling facility at its Dunniflats site in Ayrshire. The facility, which is the first of its kind in Scotland due to its co-located pressure testing capability, has the capacity to process over 25,000 units a year.
IBCs are widely used in the chemical, pharmaceutical, petrochemical, food and beverage sectors for the transportation and storage of liquids, semi-solids, pastes and solids. In fact, the latest SEPA figures show that Scotland currently disposes of over 180,000 IBC’s every year. Whilst they can be washed reconditioned and reused multiple times companies failing to use the correct services leave themselves open to the risks associated with contamination. This can render future products unfit for purpose or cause environmental issues. Worse still, it can result in residues finding their way into the food chain which presents obvious health risks for humans or livestock.
The Enva facility, which is mirrored on the company’s well-established plant in Ireland, will provide customers with a range of services including:
- Reconditioning - empty containers are washed, dried, and leak tested to original UN approved standards. These are then resold to customers looking for a more cost-effective and sustainable supply of IBC containers.
- Laundering - carried out to the same exacting levels as the reconditioning service this enables customers to continue to re-use their IBCs.
- Recycling – IBC’s that cannot be reconditioned are broken down and recycled into their constituent parts - ensuring these resources are not lost forever.
All UN approved containers must be inspected, and pressure tested at intervals not exceeding two and a half years with a more thorough test of metallic IBCs required every five (5) years. Enva customers are furnished with a certificate of recycling, which offers full traceability and peace of mind.
