Enva and EKFB Shortlisted for Food Waste and Organics Initiative of the Year

Enva, in partnership with EKFB, is proud to be shortlisted for the Awards for Excellence ‘Food Waste and Organics Initiative of the Year’ award, recognising our collaborative rollout of Simpler Recycling in complex, fast-paced construction environments.

The shortlisting reflects the scale of change required by the new Simpler Recycling food waste segregation rules and the practical, people-focused approach needed to ensure compliance on live sites. From the outset, the biggest challenge was creating consistent messaging and securing buy-in across multiple teams and work areas.

Together, Enva and EKFB developed an operational plan with approved suppliers, ensuring bin-lift collections were viable and that vehicles could access bins easily - critical details that kept the system safe, efficient and cost-effective.

We then delivered tailored communications and training for different audiences, matching the level of detail to each role. This ranged from webinars and on-site follow-ups for environmental specialists, through logistics-focused briefings on access and supplier movements, to practical sessions with cleaning teams on correct bag use to prevent contamination charges, plus dedicated engagement with office managers ahead of changes such as removing under-desk bins.

To de-risk delivery, we drew on external insights (including behavioural change thinking such as ‘choice architecture’), trialled food waste movements at scale six months before the regulation change, and refined internal container sizes from 120-litre bins to more intuitive caddies. After go-live, joint monitoring, weight reporting and site audits enabled us to troubleshoot quickly and reduce contamination—supporting cost savings and diverting tonnes of food waste from incineration to anaerobic digestion.

Matt Luntley, Key Account Manager, Enva, said:
“Working in partnership with EKFB was the difference between a policy change and a programme that actually works on live sites. By planning the operational details together—access, safe collections, container choice—and backing that up with consistent messaging and role-specific briefings, we built real buy-in across teams. The result was a smoother rollout, lower contamination, and a reliable food waste system that delivers compliance without disrupting day-to-day operations.”

Claudia Roberts, Operational Head of Environment, EKFB said:
“Enva didn’t just help us meet the Simpler Recycling requirements; they helped us design a solution that fits the realities of a live construction environment. The team brought real innovation and strategic thinking, from trialling the approach early and refining the containers and collections model to using clear, role-specific communications that drove engagement on the ground. It’s been a proactive, collaborative partnership that’s delivered measurable results and a programme we can confidently scale.”

The awards ceremony will be held at the JW Marriott Grosvenor House in London on the 13th of May. The Awards for Excellence in Recycling and Waste Management, are the UK’s most prestigious accolades for the waste, recycling, reuse and circular economy sectors.
