Retail, Hospitality & Leisure
The retail and hospitality sectors are significant contributors to commercial waste, generating multiple streams that require strategic management. The UK retail sector alone produces about 1.1 million tonnes of waste annually, including around 280,000 tonnes of food waste, equivalent to 190 million meals. Similarly, the hospitality sector generates approximately one million tonnes of food waste per year, accounting for about 10% of the total UK food waste. Sustainable and effective waste management is crucial for operational efficiency, compliance, and maintaining a strong brand reputation.
Whilst the sheer volume and variety of waste can be challenging, much of it holds substantial potential for recovery and recycling. Enva helps retail and hospitality businesses transform their waste into valuable resources, supporting sustainability goals, reducing environmental impact, and fostering a more circular economy.
Mandated Waste Segregation
Legislation such as the Waste (Scotland) Regulations 2012 and Simpler Recycling mean that retail and hospitality waste must be separated into specific waste streams for collection. Generally, this means separating waste into:
- Dry recyclable materials: Plastic, metal, glass, paper, and cardboard.
- Food waste: All food intended for human or household pet consumption,
- Non-recyclable (residual) waste
Comprehensive Waste Management Solutions
In addition to those above, Enva provides a full spectrum of waste management services for retail stores, restaurants, hotels, and other hospitality venues. Our services include:
- Total waste management: with digital reporting and compliance.
- Dedicated Food Waste Recycling: Recycling unsold food, restaurant and catering waste via in-vessel composting (IVC) or anaerobic digestion (AD) facility, where it is used to produce a soil improver product to PAS100 standard, as well as recover energy.
