Phosphorus is present in many industrial, food, pharmaceutical, chemical and municipal effluent streams.

Alongside nitrogen, phosphorus is classed as a nutrient and can contribute to eutrophication and algal bloom when discharged to rivers, lakes or receiving waters above permitted limits.
