Heavy Fuel Oil Spill Emergency Response Case Study

When a tanker carrying 26,000 litres of Heavy Fuel Oil (HFO) overturned on the N69 in County Kerry, Enva delivered a rapid, fully integrated emergency response.

Combining on-site spill containment and recovery with treatment and recovery of contaminated materials at our specialist facilities, Enva provided a complete end-to-end service that helped minimise environmental impact, protect local communities and safely and efficiently restore the affected area.

The project demonstrates Enva's ability to manage complex environmental incidents from initial response through to final treatment and recovery, providing customers with a single trusted partner throughout the process.

Following a road traffic incident on the N69 in County Kerry, a tanker carrying 26,000 litres of Heavy Fuel Oil (HFO) overturned and ruptured, releasing fuel across approximately 2km of roadway. With contamination extending into nearby residential areas, the incident required an urgent response to protect the environment, safeguard local communities, and restore safe access to the affected area.

Enva rapidly mobilised a specialist emergency response team to the scene, deploying ADR jet vacuum units, emergency response trailers and hot power-washing systems to support the recovery operation.

The immediate priority was to contain the spill, prevent further migration of contaminants and minimise environmental impact. Once containment measures were in place, free-flowing oil was safely recovered using specialist equipment.

Contaminated road surfaces were then treated with specialist cleaning equipment and environmentally approved detergents designed to break down and remove hydrocarbon residues while protecting surrounding infrastructure and sensitive environments. This enabled the affected roadway to be restored to a safe condition and reopened as quickly as possible, minimising disruption for local residents and road users.

Following the clean-up operation, all recovered oil, contaminated soil, absorbent materials and other waste arising from the incident were safely removed from site and transported to Enva's specialist treatment facilities for treatment, recovery and responsible disposal.

By combining rapid mobilisation, specialist emergency response expertise and access to specialist treatment and recovery infrastructure, Enva delivered a complete end-to-end solution that helped minimise environmental impact, reduce disruption to the local community and support the swift reopening of the roadway.
