ESB Generation was undergoing a major refurbishment programme and needed one of their Heavy Fuel Oil tanks cleaned. The tank had a capacity of 25,000t and a diameter of almost 50 meters.

ESB Generation was undergoing a major refurbishment programme and needed one of their Heavy Fuel Oil tanks cleaned. The tank contained a large volume of oil that had gone cold but it had to be transported to another generation station. Enva were selected due to their tank cleaning experience, health and safety standards and the ability to transfer the oil to the second site.

Enva Approach

Qualified Staff and Specialised Equipment

The first step for Enva was a site visit and from this a detailed Method Statement and Risk Assessment was developed. The Project Safety File also commenced.

Initial Set Up

• Transport of 10,000lb boiler to site
• Set up site included
  • Set up of boiler and diesel tank
  • Set up of site compound and welfare facilities
  • Set up of clean and dirty areas
  • Set up of loading gantry

Scope of Works

• Heating of the cold heavy fuel oil using the boiler and cooper coils placed in the oil by qualified Enva personnel
• Over 1,500 tonnes of HFO were loaded over a 3 week period into ADR certified insulated artic units and transported to the second ESB location. The off-loading was also supervised by Enva personnel
• A filtering system was used while loading the units to ensure the client received the optimum quantity and quality of HFO
• The tank was then desludged and cleaned using confined space entry crews. All waste generated to our licenced facilities

Results

100% client satisfaction

The tank was cleaned to specified requirements and the safety file was updated with all traceability and compliance documentation. The client was 100% satisfied with the services provided by Enva.
