Wastecycle – the East Midlands’ leading waste management and recycling company – which already manages the waste for four of the region’s top universities, has been selected to undertake a three-year contract with another one of the UK’s top public research and teaching universities.
De Montfort University, based in Leicester, selected Wastecycle to help make the institution’s waste management processes as cost-effective as possible, while also fully maximising the opportunity to segregate and divert waste from landfill.
As part of the contract, Wastecycle will provide a full collection and waste management service at the university’s Leicester campus, which is home to over 19,000 students and more than 3,000 academics and staff.
Paul Clements, Commercial Director at Wastecycle, said: “De Montfort University is among the UK’s top universities when it comes to enrollment, so this is a huge contract win for us.
“As a higher educational institution, De Montfort generates a vast array of waste types. We expect to see your typical types of rubbish and recyclables, like food, coffee cups, sandwich wrappers, cans and plastic bottles, as well as hazardous materials like lab chemicals, nursing waste, herbicides and paints – but we’re confident we can use our expertise to divert very close to 100% of that away from landfill.
“The strategy we’ve developed to achieve this includes week-to-week skip exchanges allowing us to stay on top of the waste being produced across the 125,000 square metre campus, as well as providing the university with detailed online waste reporting to deliver strategic information to achieve the required waste reduction and recover objectives.”
The contract, which will start in September 2016, will see Wastecycle supplying the university with 12 1100 wheelie bins and 7 10yard front-end loader skips for general waste, food waste and recycling, including paper, glass, plastics, aluminium, cardboard and wood, along with hazardous waste disposal and waste electrical, electronic equipment and batteries recycling.

“We’ve already made considerable progress in addressing environmental issues through travel planning, recycling and energy saving activities, so we hope Wastecycle’s knowledge and experience will further help us minimise the university’s environmental impact at a local, regional and national level.”
Wastecycle already manages the waste for University of Leicester, Loughborough University, University of Nottingham and Nottingham Trent University, processing a total of 8,000 tonnes of waste each year between the four, of which, over 99% is recycled and recovered.
