One of United Kingdom’s leading visitor attractions is working with local waste management and recycling company, Wastecycle, to provide the site with a more effective solution for waste.
The National Space Centre, located in Leicester, started working with Wastecycle at the beginning of September and has since seen a significant improvement in the recycling and recovery of the waste they generate.
Paul Clements, Commercial Director at Wastecycle, said: “The National Space Centre is one of the country’s most visited destinations, so we couldn’t be more excited about helping such an important attraction better manage its waste and become a more environmentally place.
“Not only has the team been a pleasure to work with over the past three months, but since our materials recycling facility is located less than a mile from The National Space Centre, we’re thrilled about being able to use our site and services to make a difference in our local community with one of our closest neighbours.”
As part of the contract, Wastecycle will manage a range of The National Space Centre’s waste streams, including its general waste, green waste, dry mixed recycling and glass. The company will be providing The National Space Centre with reports demonstrating what types of waste are being removed from the site and in what quantities. They will then use this information to help increase recycling figures month-on-month.
Since starting the contract, Wastecycle has relocated The National Space Centre’s main waste containers out of public areas, and also replaced old containers with a new efficient solution.
Wastecycle has helped divert 94% of waste from landfill during its first two months working with The National Space Centre.
Paul Clements continued: “Over the next 12 months, we will identify even more waste segregation options for The National Space Centre while increasing recycling across the site by engaging with both in-house staff and visitors, encouraging them all to be more green.
In addition to The National Space Centre, Wastecycle also manages waste and recycling for De Montfort University, Quorn Foods, University of Leicester and Loughborough University as part of a consortium with the University of Nottingham and Nottingham Trent University.
