Wastecycle Purchases State-Of-The-Art Food Waste Collection Truck For Use Throughout The East Midlands

Wastecycle – the East Midlands’ leading resource management and recycling company – has recently added a state-of-the-art food waste truck to its fleet of more than 60 vehicles.

Costing over £140,000 and capable of collecting up to seven tonnes of commercial food waste per trip, the company’s new NTM MAS collection vehicle took 10 months to produce and will operate across a 2,000 square-mile radius throughout Nottinghamshire and Leicestershire, as well as parts of Derbyshire.

Paul Clements, Commercial Director for Wastecycle, said: “Prior to purchasing the new truck last year, Wastecycle was operating a smaller vehicle that we’d vastly outgrown. We’d also just won a contract with the East Midlands University Consortium which called for a vehicle that could measure the weight of food waste produced at locations on each campus as a way of boosting waste reduction. These two factors made it an ideal time to upgrade our fleet with the new truck.

“From an industry perspective, this was perfect timing because an increasing number of corporate and socially responsible businesses are demanding food waste collections – so having this vehicle will most definitely help us meet their needs. It will also allow us to recover a higher percentage of recyclable commodities from general waste since food waste is such a major contaminant. Instead, food waste will now go for anaerobic digestion, creating soil enhancing digestates and gas for electricity generation or alternative fuel provision.”

Compliant with the Fleet Operators Recognition Scheme (FORS), the new vehicle includes numerous safety features including:

A Brigade Camera System enabling 360° monitoring of activities around the vehicle at all times

Side impact bars that reduce the risk of vulnerable road users falling under the vehicle

A left-turn audible alarm that alerts road users of the vehicles movements

A fully leak-proof body which forms a sealed container for waste, eliminating the risk of spills and leakages

Additional features on the 16-tonne, nine metres long vehicle include:

Built-in body cleaning system, along with an attached pressure washer – both to maintain a high level of hygiene

Bin weigh system that provides customers with weight information and ensures all trips maximise the available payload while remaining within the legal limit

Ability to lift bins from a distance using high-level remote control operation

Paul added: “This new truck is as efficient and safe as they come. The array of features sets a standard for the industry, so we really couldn’t be more excited about having it on the road and making the East Midlands a much greener region.”
